MISD's Elementary Reading Program |
MISD is committed to ensuring that all students are offered reading instruction tailored to individual academic strengths and weaknesses.
THE GOLDEN HOUR: The Midland Independent School District uses the McGraw Hill Reading Program in kindergarten through sixth grade. Students take part in both large and small group reading instruction, reading both fiction and nonfiction reading material. The reading program is a balanced literacy program that offers students a wealth of reading material at a variety of reading levels. This reading time is called the "golden hour" because it is an uninterupted and protected reading time that is a priority for all schools.
THE SILVER HOUR: Students reading below grade level are offered an additional small group reading lesson each day in addition to their regular reading instruction. The "Early Success Reading Program" is used in first and second grade. Students in third through sixth grade learn reading comprehension strategies from the "Soar to Success" reading program.
