What is the overall goal of MISD social studies? Develop productive citizens for full participation in a democratic society
What makes for effective teaching and learning in social studies? Interactive - linking ideas and concepts from several social studies content areas, i.e., history, government, economics, etc.
Meaningful - connect main ideas and concepts to the lives of students
Challenging - offer thought-provoking content and strategies to teach students with wide ranges in their abilities
Value-based - deal with important major concepts and ideas; use facts to describe and support major ideas and concepts
Involved - involving students as participants in the learning process through problem solving, decision making, simulations, and varied activities
Why does this type of teaching matter? Teachers want students to acquire excellent content knowledge, use a full range of thinking skills, practice citizenship skills in a classroom setting, and learn to work independently as well as cooperativily.
