A Letter to Parents - Dated October 31, 2006 Dear Abell Parent,
In order to comply with the changing passing standards for students and the Student Success Initiative, it becomes necessary for the staff at Abell to make sure, that as a parent, you understand the educational responsibilities for your child. Passing grades and benchmarks are the assessments we look at to determine your child's success in a subject area. It becomes vitally important for your child to receive all the necessary assistance we can provide.
In the Midland Independent School District Policy Code under FEA (Legal) it states: A student must attend: - An extended-year program for which the student is eligible that is provided by the District for students identified as likely not to be promoted to the next grade level or tutorial classes required by the District under Educational Code 29.084.
- An accelerated reading instruction program to which the student has been assigned under Education Code 28.006.
- An accelerated instruction program to which the student is assigned under Educational Code 28.0211.
- A basic skills program to which the student is assigned under Educational Code 29.086.
You may be contacted by your child's teacher to attend mandatory tutorials due to grades falling below 70, low benchmark scores or poor test assessment. It will be your responsibility to make sure your child understands the importance of this program and to try their hardest to be successful. If a warning notice is issued, a parent or person standing in parental relation with the criminal negligence fails to require the child to attend school as required by the law and the child has absences for the amount of time specified under Education Code 25.094, the attendance officer or other appropriate school official shall file a complaint against him or her in an appropriate court, as permitted under Education Code 25.093.
Please take the time to discuss with your child the importance of doing their best in school and support the additional effort of mandatory tutorials. If you have any further questions, please call 689-6200 and discuss your child's grades with their teacher. Working together we can accomplish great realities for your child.
Sincerely,
Deborah L. Jordan Principal |
